She read the letter again. She'd been receiving letters, once a month from her father since he'd left her as a young child. They told of wonders that she could barely imagine. The people, the land, they all sounded quite magical.
An adventurous man, with itchy feet, he would say. Her father looked for opportunities to make his fortune and he had many times. They were wealthy. She lived in the better part of Paris. Brought up by nannies, governesses and now she had a companion.
She was well educated, spoke several languages but with no parents to see her into society, she lived an isolated life. She squeezed the letter tightly in her hand and called for the maid.
The date on the letter was a month old. They should have sent a telegraph. The news of its success in laying the cables for communicating between the Americans and Europe was well known. It had been emblazed across the news. So much time had been lost. She held in her despair. Her father needed her to think, not break down and instructed her maid to have her lawyer attend her immediately.
This letter was not from her father but a lawman. Her father was missing. He'd left one ship making his way across land to another as was his monthly routine. Checking on his business interests. Steam paddle boats made to his own design, he'd put them on the rivers there. Employing captains that knew the rivers well and the business flourished.
People could eat, drink, gamble, see a show, take a cabin and stay a while as it traversed up and down the river. So glamorous. She'd been a little envious.
Lost in her memories, she was shaken from them as the lawyer came in quickly the maid taking his hat and gloves.
"Thank you for coming so quickly Mr Toussaint. Amelie coffee for two please." She handed him the lawman's letter giving him time to read it. "My father's affairs are all in order Mr Toussaint?"
He gave a nod. "They are. The businesses continue to grow and his Will is in place."
"Good. I'm going to need several things. Passage to New Orleans as soon as possible with cabins for 3. My companion will go with me and I need a Policeman who knows security and can offer some protection should it be needed on the journey." Mr Toussaint gave a nod, took out his notebook and started writing. "I will also need you to send telegraphs to this lawman and my father's offices instructing both that I am coming. The work to continue and the lawman to use all available resources to find my father. I expect a full accounting on my arrival from both. If my father is still missing, I want the best there is to find him."
"Are you sure Amelie? You know nothing of that land. And should you be lost too?" Mr Toussaint looked shocked and quite scared.
"I'm sure. Make up my Will Mr Toussaint. Should both my father and I be gone, everything goes equally to charities here and over there."
Mr Toussaint took a book from his bag and looked up something. "There's a ship due to leave tomorrow.
