The book about The Gnostics has a black cover that was strewn with white stars. There were many of these but somehow the darkness seemed stronger. Inside all was exciting and mysterious. I read about the ancient Carpocratians, founded by a young man who died at the age of 21; they practised free love and the debauching of the senses so as to exhaust sin on earth. Also I could not help noticing that two of the Gnostic sects, the Marcionites and the Valnetinians, when you took them together, almost made up my name. This suggested a special significance, though I could not quite say what it was
