Is there such a thing as chance? Coincidence? Luck, good or bad? Or does God dictate all things, or even the important ones? Herr Schaefer and Mrs. Henshel unexpectedly find themselves searching for answers on these matters in this horror story by Agatha Christie set in South Africa just after the Great War.
Publisher's note (Kindle): this is a little-known Christie short story which may have been first published in a little-known Italian magazine in the 1920s. It was retrieved on the 19th of June 2013 by Kindle and is only 9 pages in length. The Kindle edition gives some background to the story and faithfully reproduces the Italian version. The English translation follows. Included is further reference material to ensure a better understanding of the story.
Librarian's note #1: this story has alternate titles, 'The Woman of Kenite,' and 'The Wife of the Kenite.' Same horrific content.
Librarian's note #2: there is a second possibility as to the story's original publication. Tony Medawar, editor of 'Bodies from the Library' which came out in 2019 and included 'The Wife of the Kenite,' states that it first appeared in Australia's 'Home Magazine' in September 2022. This seems to be more likely as it is difficult to believe that an English language version was not the initial publication. The alternate titles may relate to the translation from Italian back to English.
Librarian's note: this story is included in 'Bodies from the Library' (2019).
