World War Two. Lieutenant Donald Cameron, DSC, rapidly gaining hard-won experience on naval battle stations, is drafted to the antiquated cruiser Northumberland. The ships task is to destroy German raiders on Allied supply routes. When at last the old Northumberland goes down, after a gruelling battle with a German heavy cruiser, Cameron is the only executive officer left amongst the survivors in the boats — apart from his sick captain, often delirious but determined to command. Thousands of miles from land and shipping lanes, their only hope is to be picked up by a roving warship.
