McAlpine may have his eye on Colin. But he’s failed to notice one crucial detail. Namely, Colin’s complicated feelings for McAlpine’s beautiful and damaged wife.

Detective Sergeant Winifred ‘Freddie’ Costello may be a first-rate, intuitive detective. But she has suffered many misfortunes in life. Like being named after not one, but two grandmothers. And don’t even mention her track record with cars. Like the men in her life, they have a habit of letting her down just when she needs them most. Then there’s her wholly inappropriate fixation with her boss — the chiselled and enigmatic McAlpine. Try as she might, she can’t seem to shake her infatuation with him.
