After losing his magic and failing out of the university, Tal has been working as a flight attendant on a dragon airline. Not just any dragon airline, but a budget one, filled with needy passengers and riding a dragon with questionable landing abilities.

Tal wants nothing more than to figure out how get his magic back so he can return to his old life as a mage. Two developments throw him off this path: dragon rights activists, led by a prickly woman named Bex, begin picketing the airline, at the same time as Tal discovers he has the unheard of ability to communicate with dragons. To make matters worse, his newfound abilities reveal that the dragons are planning a possibly fiery rebellion against the airline.

As he begins to begrudgingly befriend the activists, passengers, and dragon, Tal’s previously antagonistic relationship with Bex begins to turn in a romantic direction. He suddenly finds himself with a reason to care about his life outside of being a mage—just at the moment when it might all be taken away.
