After government officials deemed their property uninhabitable, residents of a small Louisiana island were forced from their homes and relocated to a tiny piece of barren land. One family, refusing to go along with the government’s relocation efforts, headed east into the Forbidden Swamps, where they lived in peace for decades.
But now…they’re being hunted.
When an injured kid makes it out of the Forbidden Swamps and reports the slaughter of three other teenagers, Clint Wolf and Melvin Saltzman head into the jungle to find the crime scene and search for victims. What they encounter is much more than they bargained for, and they soon find their own lives in jeopardy.
London Carter is visiting his grandparents in Galliano, Louisiana when he learns of Clint's troubles, and he immediately heads into the swamps to search for his friend. When London runs into danger of his own, it looks like he might’ve come out of retirement only to be killed in the mosquito-infested jungles of Mechant Loup.
Will this be the day that the bad guys win?
BUT NOT FOR FAME
After his first mystery series flops, struggling author Thad Griffin is about to throw in the towel. And then one night over Ramen noodles, he and his wife find a popular show about alligator hunting on TV. He suddenly has an idea. On a wing and a prayer, he takes his wife on a trip to the swamps of Louisiana, where he gathers an entire notebook of ideas while visiting the colorful towns of Galliano, Pointe-aux-Chenes, Bourg, Chauvin, and Cocodrie. He’s so filled with inspiration that he pens the first book in his new Gator Haven mystery series within eight weeks of returning home.
The series is an instant hit, and fame soon finds the author. Convincing his wife that he needs to be closer to his setting, he packs up the family and moves to Mechant Loup, Louisiana. They’re not there three months when tragedy strikes.
Members of the Mechant Loup Police Department respond to the scene and they find Griffin’s wife dead in her own driveway—the victim of an apparent hit and run. Clint Wolf is lead on the case, but details are scarce and a motive seemingly nonexistent, so he’ll need lots of help from his team. A stolen car and a gas receipt might provide some clues, but it’ll take much more than a piece of paper to solve the mystery.
Clint and company sift through lies, evidence, and manuscripts, but will it be enough? If they fail, it’ll be too late for a second victim—and none of them want that loss on their conscience.
BUT NOT FORTHCOMING
Clint Wolf’s birthday is fast approaching, and he and his German shepherd, Achilles, decide to run some catfish lines one night in preparation for the upcoming celebratory fish fry.
While placing their first set of lines, they stumble upon a camp that had been burglarized. Being the chief of detectives for the Mechant Loup Police Department means that Clint is always on duty, so he does the dutiful thing and begins searching other camps in the area. Sure enough, they discover more break-ins, and the hunt for the burglar begins.
Although they search for hours and travel deep into the remote swamps, they’re unable to locate the thief. Clint is just entering a place called Pelican Basin when Achilles is suddenly on high alert, and all of his attention is focused on one camp. Clint heads in that direction, ever wary that they might be stumbling into a trap.
When they draw near to the camp, Achilles suddenly leaps from the boat.
